When an oil spill occurs in a turbine building, drainage systems can mean the difference between rapid control and a catastrophic pool fire. Yet these critical systems are often restricted, overlooked, or unable to perform as designed when a release occurs. This latest Quick Tip highlights why drainage failures are more common than expected—and how proactive inspection and testing can significantly reduce fire risk before an incident happens.
AEGIS Loss Control is pleased to publish various resources throughout the year, including Quick Tips and white papers. Geared toward Members who serve in operations and risk management roles, these resources highlight the importance of inspection, maintenance, infrastructure and employee and public safety.

Reliable access to clean, potable water and water for community fire protection is often taken for granted. Ensuring we have access to water when and where we need it requires vigilance — rigorous inspection and security protocols for treatment facilities and distribution systems are paramount.
AEGIS Announces New Alliance Partnership with Liberty Mutual
Alliance underscores AEGIS’s long-term stability and commitment to exceptional member service.
All sprinkler heads have a defined lifespan that corresponds to an indemnification period during which a manufacturer or supplier agrees to cover certain liabilities or risks incurred from the product, such as defective materials or safety recalls. The Central O-ring seal recall in the early 2000s is a good example. The courts gave consumers (facility owners) a window of time to file a claim for sprinkler heads with the faulty O-ring. Once that window closed, liability shifted from the manufacturer to the facility owner. However, even without recalls, sprinkler heads across all manufacturers have an indemnified lifespan and need to be tested and/or replaced regularly.
As electric utility infrastructure ages, posing increased risks, wood pole maintenance and inspection strategies have become a priority for electric utilities. The consequences of a pole failure are significant. In addition to negatively impacting system reliability, pole failures can also result in fatalities, serious injuries, property losses and utility-initiated wildfires. Comprehensive asset management strategies that encompass regular inspections, timely maintenance and proactive risk mitigation should be part of the utility’s pole maintenance program.
As the number of Li-ion Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) facilities being installed continues to rise rapidly, it’s crucial to address the hazards and risks associated with these facilities during the design, installation and operation phases. AEGIS published our initial white paper on this topic back in 2021. As more BESS facilities are constructed and remain operational for longer periods, we continue to learn from both losses and model practices across our membership. The first revision to the BESS white paper was released in 2023, expanding on the Deflagration Hazard Study (DHS), installation-level testing criteria and concerns associated with various facility configurations, such as parking garage-style layouts and enclosure stacking. Available now, this second revision contains additional and updated information, including:

Equivalent operating hours (EOH) are used to determine maintenance intervals for equipment.
Typically, EOH calculations for generating facilities have been used to determine maintenance intervals, based on the assumption of primarily base-loaded operation. This line of thinking may no longer be relevant given today’s diverse operating modes. Factors, such as modified start-up profiles, over-temperature operation, increased duty cycles, low load operation, trips, unstable water chemistry and other variables can accelerate the wear and reduce the lifespan of steam turbines.
