Since its inception, AEGIS has been solely focused on the energy industry – and our thought leadership cannot be matched.
Formed under the premise that unity brings strength, AEGIS was founded in 1975 when thirteen gas companies experiencing capacity, coverage and pricing issues with the commercial insurance market joined together to form a mutual. Since then, the mutual has grown to include over 550 policyholders, representing the entire energy infrastructure in North America, including electric and natural gas utilities, independent power producers, transmission, distribution and pipeline companies, water utilities, and other energy-related infrastructure.
For over 50 years, AEGIS has been a cornerstone of the energy industry, providing the consistency, stability and expertise our members depend on. Working collaboratively with our members to anticipate needs, AEGIS delivers thoughtful risk management guidance, responsive coverage and unmatched claims support to meet evolving risk management needs. We remain committed to serving as a trusted resource for our members now and in the future.
Our dedicated team of experienced underwriters, loss control professionals and claims attorneys focuses exclusively on providing our policyholder members expert guidance and products and services tailored to manage evolving utility and energy exposures. This deep industry expertise sets us apart from commercial carriers and enables us to help our members navigate short-term pressures and chart long-term strategies. Our expertise, combined with specialized loss control services and a collaborative and fair approach to claims management, has set AEGIS apart from commercial insurance companies since we were founded by our policyholder-members in 1975.

New Jersey Roots with a Global Reach
Our main office is in Jersey City, New Jersey, where we employ a professional staff of more than 300 talented individuals. We provide coverage to members in the United States and Canada. Founded in 1999, our AEGIS London office operates Syndicate 1225 at Lloyd's of London, which offers a wide range of coverage traditionally written in the Lloyd's market.
AEGIS (Associated Electric & Gas Insurance Services Limited) is owned by its policyholder-members and is registered as a Class 3 non-assessable mutual insurance company in Bermuda. AEGIS is an eligible surplus lines insurer in all jurisdictions in the United States, a licensed foreign insurance company throughout Canada and a registered foreign reinsurer in Mexico. AEGIS Insurance Services, Inc. is a wholly-owned subsidiary providing professional staff and services to AEGIS.
