What is Covered

The majority of natural gas service delivery is done through high-pressure gas lines that terminate at or inside the customer’s building wall, where the pressure is reduced for consumption by an aluminum-based gas regulator. Structure fire, vehicle impact and building incidents can damage these regulators, allowing the release of high-pressure gas, which, if ignited, results in a large gas-fed fire that cannot be safely extinguished without shutting off the supply of gas. The delay between fire detection and the arrival of the fire department can cause extensive property damage and potential loss of life. Participants will learn about thermal-activated shutoff valves, which stop the flow of natural gas, propane or butane in the event of a fire. Installed on jurisdictional gas piping, upstream of the meter and regulator, this simple device protects lives and property by automatically stopping the gas supply when a fire occurs.

Doug Staebler serves as the Director of Business Development for TECO Americas. He is a veteran of the natural gas industry, having worked in natural gas operations for over 30 years, serving in leadership positions, including Senior Vice President of Utility Operations at Washington Gas Light.

Wally Armstrong is one of the principal owners of Liberty Sales and Distribution. He possesses over 39 years of industry experience, which includes 15 years at Colonial Gas Company. Among the proposed amendments are strengthened leak survey requirements and performance standards for advanced leak detection programs.

The presentation will share the experiences of Duke Energy during their 3+ year pilot project using satellite imagery to detect methane on their natural gas system. The presenter will discuss the benefits of using advanced methane leak detection technologies, such as satellite imagery, to drive toward their net zero methane goals. Successes, surprises and lessons learned from the pilot will be shared. Participants will also learn about Duke Energy’s scaling plans and the regulatory path forward as they navigate an environmental climate with increased scrutiny around the natural gas industry.

Erin Jedlikowski is the Manager, AMLD Technology & Emissions at Duke Energy. She has 17 years of experience in the natural gas distribution industry, holding responsibilities for a variety of departments over the years, including Organizational Development, Customer Service, Work Management and most recently, Climate & Emissions. Jordan began his five-year journey at CORE as Utility Forester, where he managed CORE’s vegetation management through QA/QC and incorporated new technologies to advance the program until he was promoted to his current role as head of CORE's Wildfire Mitigation Program. His background in vegetation management and desire to combat the realities of climate change affecting many states across the West has driven Jordan's focus to achieve a best-in-class Wildfire Mitigation Program at CORE. Jordan holds certifications as an ISA Certified Arborist, Utility Specialist and Wildfire Mitigation Specialist.

Tracy Browder is a Property Supervisor in Property Operations Loss Control for AEGIS Insurance Services. Tracy has been with AEGIS for seven years and has 25-plus years of experience in fire protection, with the past 16 years focused on the electric utility industry. Prior to joining AEGIS, he served as Loss Control Engineer for XCEL Energy as well as Captain at the Department of Energy Pantex Plant Fire Department, overseeing fire prevention and special operations.

Tracy has a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Technology and an Associate’s degree in Electronic Systems from the Community College of the Air Force. He also holds an Associate Risk Management certification from The Institutes, a Fire Protection and Safety Technology certificate from Oklahoma State University, and a Certified Fire Protection Specialist Certification from the National Fire Protection Association.    

Anthony Martin provides Account Management services for Underwriting and is the Renewable Energy Technical Lead for AEGIS. He also supports the membership through the Renewable Energy Working Group. Anthony has over 30 years of Mechanical Breakdown loss control experience in the commercial and utility insurance industry.  

Before joining AEGIS, Anthony worked at AIG as a Senior Loss Control Consultant, providing account engineering and field engineering for the Power Generation division of Energy and Engineer Risks. Prior to AIG, Anthony worked as Regional Manager at CNA Insurance. He began his career with Hartford Steam Boiler, where he performed risk assessments, infrared inspections on electrical and mechanical equipment, loss investigations, and consulting for companies in the utility industry and high-hazard occupancies.

Anthony has a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Texas A&M University. He held a National Board of Boiler & Pressure Vessel Commission with an “A” endorsement. He belongs to several industry and professional associations.

As companies look to reduce their environmental impact, professionals responsible for fire protection systems need to understand the potentially detrimental effects of per-and polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) chemicals found in some in aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) fire suppressants. This important webinar provides an overview of replacement alternatives to the harmful PFAS chemicals found in AFFF fire suppressants, which pose a serious environmental threat.

Power plant employees, risk management professionals and those individuals engaged in fire protection system design, maintenance and operation of AFFF fire protection systems would benefit from attending this webinar.

What is Covered:

Aqueous film-forming foam, or AFFF, is a fire suppressant used to fight flammable liquid fires.  This fire suppressant has been in use within power generating facilities and many other occupancies since the late 1960s. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl chemicals (PFAS) are used in AFFF to make the mixture foamy and create a film that helps extinguish fires. These chemicals, present in some AFFF solutions, are highly resistant to degradation and pose serious environmental concerns. 

This webinar will continue to focus on the environmental issues associated with AFFF and explore current efforts regarding AFF replacement solutions and alternatives.

The webinar will be presented by Joseph McElvaney, P.E., Lead Fire Protection Engineer for The Hiller Companies. He has been with AEGIS for thirteen years and has 40-plus years of experience in the electric utility industry. Prior to joining AEGIS, Howard served as General Manager of Electric Operations for Consolidated Edison. Before that, he was Director of Environmental, Health and Safety, and worked as a Bulk Power Senior System/Grid Operator for the New York City electric and steam systems.

Howard has a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and a Master of Science degree in Operations Research from NYU Tandon School of Engineering – Brooklyn Polytechnic, as well as a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Manhattan College. He is also a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of New York and is certified as a Safety Professional and as an Electrical Safety Compliance Professional.

What is Covered 

Natural gas is safe, reliable and affordable, and remains an essential part of the evolving American energy sector. Over 189 million Americans and 5.6 million businesses rely on natural gas to heat their homes, warm their water, and cook their food.  Public safety awareness campaigns educate the public on recognizing a gas leak by its distinctive “rotten egg” odor injected into natural gas, which itself is colorless and odorless. Unfortunately, despite these efforts, many gas leaks continue to go unreported for a variety of reasons, including age-related respiratory illness and loss of smell. 

NFPA data shows on average, 4,200 gas-fed fires occur annually, and PHMSA data shows gas events involving significant property damage, serious injuries and fatalities occur every three days. These fires and significant events are caused by gas leaks from home appliances or utility infrastructure. Although most building codes do not require gas alarms, newer safety standards and advanced gas safety products are now available to protect lives and property, reduce greenhouse emissions and mitigate community risk.

This critical safety presentation highlights the opportunity to equip natural gas customers with advanced residential methane detectors with alarm capabilities to protect both people and property. The presenters will review the evolution of this technology and demonstrate how key elements and proven results now support the widespread use of gas alarms as an additional layer of protection, much like smoke and carbon monoxide detectors have reliably done for decades.

About the Presenters

Oscar Leon is General Manager – Manhattan Gas Operations for Consolidated Edison of New York. He has been with the company for 19 years. Oscar leads the boots on the ground for 24-hour x 365 day emergency response, construction work, gas leak repair, gas turn-ons and turn-offs, gas meter exchanges, inspection programs, service line inspections, and natural gas detector installations. Responsibility also expands in partaking in a unified command structure with the FDNY and other emergency services members within CECONY’s gas service territory.

Oscar holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in organizational management and a Master of Science Degree in organizational leadership from Manhattan College. Oscar is also a member of the Society of Gas Operators.

Marc Adams is Managing Director North America – New Cosmos USA, Inc. This joint AEGIS Loss Control/OSU three-day training class is geared toward employees responsible for inspection, testing or maintenance of fire protection systems or for those managing 3rd parties who perform this work. AEGIS member company employees will receive both classroom and hands-on instruction on the various types of fire protection systems associated with power generation and natural gas midstream operations. In addition to traditional classroom instruction and practical exercises, attendees are encouraged to participate in the hands-on training sessions to become familiar with the fire protection/equipment that’s typically used in the power generation and natural gas industry. Casual dress is recommended for the hands-on training sessions.

The following topics will be covered:

• Power generation and natural gas midstream operations fire hazards
• Fire pumps/water supplies overview and testing
• Fire alarm and detection systems
• Water-based extinguishing systems
• Alternative extinguishing systems (i.e., CO2, FM200, etc.)
   

We are offering a discounted registration fee of $400 for employees of AEGIS member companies who register by July 1, 2024. After this date, the fee will increase to $600. This fee includes the cost of the three-day training class, a copy of NFPA 25 (Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of WaterBased Fire Protection Systems code book), the AEGIS-sponsored group dinners, as well as lunch each day. You will be asked to provide your credit card information during the registration process. Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover are accepted.

If you must cancel your registration prior to the class, please cancel no later than September 12. The class fee, minus an administrative fee of $25, will be refunded to your credit card.  

A limited number of rooms have been reserved at the Residence Inn by Marriott Stillwater. The room block is being managed by AEGIS Loss Control. However, the intermittent nature of wind and solar power often does not align with peak electricity demand. What is Covered

This webinar will focus on considerations necessary for extending operations of traditional power generation facilities beyond the expected 30-year design life to ensure a stable power grid. This extension requires diligent maintenance and careful monitoring of equipment whose longevity varies based on its design and usage. Participants will discuss practical measures such as equipment overhaul or replacement, improved inspection, non-destructive testing, sample testing, and other considerations with a concentration on combustion turbine technology.  

About the Presenter

Tom Freeman is a graduate of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana, with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. He began his career at Pratt & Whitney in South Florida in 1985 working on X-planes, particularly on hypersonic propulsion.  In 1999, Tom relocated to Greenville, South Carolina, to join GE Energy, where he served as the technical leader for Systems Engineering Performance, developing the gas turbine thermodynamic simulations.  Pursuing his passion for customer relationships, Tom moved to Atlanta in 2003, where he was the Gas Turbine Leader for Services Engineering, leading a team of over 100 engineers in providing technical solutions supporting the entire GE heavy-duty gas turbine fleet. Here, he began to travel rather extensively to meet with customers. In 2013, he was named Sales Director for Engineered Solutions in North America, providing the technical expertise for selling many innovative solutions, including the Advanced Gas Path (AGP). Tom joined Multi-Year Agreements in 2016 to create a new Product Line (Solutions) team to target innovation in blending market, mission, and model (technology) with creative commercial solutions.
