Mitigating Risk of Reduced Design Margins in Advanced Frame Gas Turbines

Wednesday, Dec 04, 2019 | 2:00pm to 3:00pm Online

By chasing higher capacity ratings, improved combustion turbine efficiency, lower cost and increased operational flexibility, advanced frame gas turbine design margins are reduced, and design issues can result.  Based on extensive experience carrying out design, development, validation and field issue resolution of heavy-duty gas turbines, aero-derivatives and commercial aircraft engines, experts agree that gas turbine failures often result from the interconnectedness of design issues and operational changes.

This webinar will focus on the development of an accurate root cause analysis, which identifies the causes of equipment failures and common causes of multiple failures. The presenter will discuss mitigating the risk of reduced design margins with possible ensuing failures, which requires an accurate root cause analysis to refute the typical root cause analysis.  Typical root cause analysis often focuses incorrectly on symptoms and one-off events, for example, material defects, manufacturing variations, corrosion, transportation problems, operator errors or maintenance problems.

This webinar will be presented by Dr. Steven Koff, Founder and President of TurboVision Consulting Group.  Dr. Koff has 37 years of experience leading visionary strategic product planning, innovative technology development, rapid new product development, novel product cost reduction, new manufacturing process development, unique root cause analysis and rapid field issue resolution in areas of energy, renewable energy, aerospace, oil and gas, iron and steel, chemicals and transportation.  Dr. Koff received a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Michigan in 1981, SM and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1983 and 1987, respectively, and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1993.  He was elected a Fellow of The American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 2003, and an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 2005.
