Updates to Current Codes and Technologies For Large-Scale Battery Storage Systems

Updates to Current Codes and Technologies For Large-Scale Battery Storage Systems

Tuesday, Oct 01, 2019 | 2:00pm to 3:00pm Online

In the past year, improvements and modifications have been made to NFPA 855, IFC, State Codes, technologies and AEGIS Lessons Learned for large-scale energy storage systems.

This webinar will address the many changes in code requirements, as well as the advancements in battery storage technology.  It will also lay out an approach to managing large-scale battery failures and fires.  Because the industry does not yet have projectable data and with codes still in development, this presentation will draw from testing conducted to date as well as real-life experiences with fire detection and suppression systems.  The webinar will also explain how current technologies now may stack in a complimentary fashion to cover all aspects of a lithium ion battery failure.  This coverage can include single cell failure onset through to propagation, the incipient fire stage, and full system involvement with specific emphasis on detection of failure, determination of fire stage and threat, and thermal management for suppression.

Paul Hayes, the CEO, owner and principal engineer of American Fire Technologies, has more than 30 years of experience managing a special hazard asset protection fire company for the industrial and power markets.  Paul is a graduate of North Carolina State University, with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.  He is designated as a Professional Engineer in Civil Engineering and Fire Protection in more than 35 states.  Paul has NFPA code committee and code development experience, as well as knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations, and experience in regulatory agency negotiations.  His knowledge of products includes alarm and detection equipment, specialty devices, and both chemical and water-based suppression systems.  Paul has provided marketing, sales and engineered solutions for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) component of projects, turbine and utility markets, and project management ranging from individual projects to complex sites for private and utility clients.
