Wildfires in the United States are increasing in both frequency and severity, and because utility companies are perceived as having “deep pockets” they’re often named as defendants in high-stakes wildfire litigation. Many government entities, property owners and insurers who have sustained wildfire-related damages see utilities as a significant recovery opportunity, and recent cases have resulted in damage estimates exceeding $1 billion.
How can utilities best defend themselves? How should utilities respond to the media and to regulators? What can be done to help avoid exposure altogether? The symposium agenda features a panel of experienced attorneys and industry experts who will discuss the issues:
* Wildfire loss prevention measures
* Conducting a proper wildfire investigation
* Responding to regulators
* Managing the media
* Effective use of specialized liability and damages experts
* Defending against fire suppression costs and natural resource claims
* Inverse condemnation
* Successful negotiation strategies
The symposium is a one-day event, running from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Many of our members in Western states will be able to return home on Wednesday, but those wishing to stay overnight in Las Vegas before and/or after the symposium can make hotel reservations at the Wynn Las Vegas by calling the hotel at 1.866.770.7555. Please be sure to mention AEGIS to get the newly discounted group rate of $159 per night. The deadline for making reservations at the Wynn is Monday, January 27. There are additional hotel options near the Wynn, but Las Vegas will be particularly busy that week, so you should make hotel reservations as soon as possible.
AEGIS member company personnel from claims, legal, risk management, operations, maintenance and engineering, as well as members’ dedicated outside counsel, are encouraged to attend.
Please register now for the symposium and make your hotel reservations as soon as possible. We look forward to seeing you in Las Vegas.
