Unplanned Generation Outage

The unplanned generation outage policy, known as “Power Shield,” provides energy price protection in the event of power generation outage and electricity commodity price spikes.

Scope of coverage: loss sustained, not tied to an index; outage period triggered when unplanned outage occurs and outage period price trigger is exceeded; ends when either unplanned outage ends or prices fall below outage period price trigger.

Full indemnification for replacement energy costs (actual loss sustained) or payment to the insured for energy sales losses.

Coverage not limited to named perils; applies if the member must physically disconnect from the grid; can be extended to include unplanned generation derates; based on ANSI/IEEE definitions.

Insurance applies to the generation assets (single unit, selected plants, or the entire system).

Seasonal, monthly or annual terms.

Limit options are each event and aggregate in US dollars or megawatt caps.

Triggers are an unplanned outage and when the outage period price trigger (spot market price) exceeds a predetermined and specified US dollar amount per MWh. A heat rate trigger based on natural gas prices can also be considered.

Deductible options include per event in US dollars, US dollars per MWh, MW, seasonal aggregate and coinsurance.
