Associated Electric & Gas Insurance Services Limited (AEGIS) is a non-assessable mutual insurance company owned by its policyholder-members. It began operations in Bermuda in 1975, and is an eligible surplus lines insurer in most jurisdictions in the United States. AEGIS Insurance Services, Inc. (AEGIS Services), a wholly owned managing general agent, provides professional staff and services to AEGIS.

The mission of AEGIS is to assure utility and related energy industry members consistently superior insurance and risk management products and services through a secure and stable market enabling members to achieve the lowest overall long-term cost of risk.

AEGIS was formed to serve the utility and related energy industry. As these businesses have evolved to meet the challenges of an ever-changing market, so has AEGIS. Member companies currently include gas and electric utilities, related energy companies, oil & gas exploration and production companies, water utilities, and transmission & distribution companies.

Directly and through alliances, AEGIS offers a full range of sophisticated insurance and risk management products and services, including excess liability, fiduciary and employee benefits liability, professional liability, excess workers’ compensation, directors and officers liability, employment practices liability, property and financial products. In alliance with a strategic partner, AEGIS offers its members primary general liability, commercial automobile liability, umbrella liability, workers’ compensation and construction coverage.

AEGIS also has international capabilities, including AEGIS London and Syndicate 1225 at Lloyd's of London.

The membership count at the end of 2008 was 429, which reflects a retention ratio of nearly 100% in the traditional group of policyholders. As a mutual insurance company, AEGIS recognizes members’ ownership interests through continuity credits, which allow members to reduce their cost of insurance. Since 1987, AEGIS has returned more than $900 million to members in general liability and directors and officers liability credits, including $215 million in just the last five years. AEGIS offers similar programs for property and for continuous business written through AEGIS London.

AEGIS enjoys an A.M. Best rating of A - (Excellent) with a stable outlook and Fitch rating of A - (Strong).

The AEGISlink website allows registered AEGIS members and their designated brokers to view their policies and claims, apply for coverage, submit claims, access industry data, and download presentations made at conferences hosted by AEGIS throughout the year.
